Back The Doctor" - 132,300 viewers (.9% share)
BBC7 http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbc7 has announced the premiere of an
extended series of Doctor Who on their digital radio station. But
the series was made a few years back. 4 full length full cast audio
stories released direct to CD by Big Finish
http://www.doctorwho.co.uk in 2001 and 2002 are being re-edited to
fit onto BBC7's schedule. The stories feature Paul McGann returning
as the 8th Doctor and India Fisher as companion Charley Pollard. The
stories are:
Storm Warning (Big Finish #16, 1st 8th Doctor/Charley story)
Sword Of Orion (Big Finish #17, 2nd 8th Doctor/Charley story)
The Stones Of Venice (Big Finish #18, 3rd 8th Doctor/Charley story)
Invaders From Mars (Big Finish #28, 5th 8th Doctor/Charley story)
The 4 stories will be serialized over 16 weeks (1 episode per week).
Stories air Saturdays at 6:30PM and 12:30AM BST from 6 August to 19
November. BBC7 has gotten the rights to these stories after the
success of the 3 BBC Doctor Who stories that have aired on the
channel several times. It is unknown if BBC7 will acquire any more
stories (8th Doctor or other) in the future.
Since Big Finish made their episodes at variable lengths, some will
have to be abridged to fit within BBC7's 29 minute time limits.
Cliffhangers could be moved in some cases to shift material from a
long episode to a short one - but we do not know if that will
happen. One known change will be the removal of Ramsey the Vortisore
from Sword Of Orion and The Stones Of Venice. This change is needed
because Minuet In Hell (#19, 4th 8th Doctor/Charley story) has not
been acquired to air at this time. No reason is given for excluding
Minuet In Hell, though the story over-runs more than other early 8th
Doctor stories. Also, Invaders From Mars has Simon Pegg (Shaun Of
The Dead, the Editor in Doctor Who: The Long Game), Mark Benton
(Clive in Doctor Who: Rose), and was written/directed by Mark Gatiss
(writer of Doctor Who: The Unquiet Dead) - it has a lot of
connection with this year's series on BBC One.
Doctor Who fans in the UK without a digital radio, Freeview TV box,
digital cable, or digital satellite - and fans outside the UK - can
hear BBC7 live in RealPlayer or Windows Media Player streams on
their website. For one week after the broadcasts you can hear the
episode in RealPlayer on the Listen Again section of the site. And
if you want the unedited versions, check Big Finish's website or the
other web services that sell Big Finish CDs.
UKTV Gold http://www.ukgold.tv - several developments.
1) The current run of the stories ends on 24 September with Survival. On 25 September the channel airs Four To Doomsday, so either they are skipping around or the Tom Baker stories will be bypassed this time around.
2) The documentaries Carnival of Monsters and Adventures in Space and Time from the 1999 BBC2 Doctor Who Night will air after Survival on 24 September.
3) Outpost Gallifrey http://www.gallifreyone.com reports that UKTV Gold will air the 2005 Doctor Who series (Christopher Eccleston, Billie Piper) over a week starting Monday 23 October at 7 and 8PM.
British forces around the world have gotten to see Doctor Who - if
they kept track of the BFBS Navy TV schedule. Doctor Who, Doctor Who
Confidential (full length), and the BBC One Confidential tie in
specials have aired on BFBS Navy TV over the past few months, with
the final scheduled broadcast last Saturday 23 July.
The new series of Doctor Who has begun production. Outpost Gallifrey
and the BBC Doctor Who site http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho have
pictures and reports from 25 July, when David Tennant went to work
as the Doctor.
The BBC Press Office http://www.bbc.co.uk/pressoffice and C21 Media
http://www.c21media.net often announce when a Doctor Who
international sale occurs. Worth keeping an eye on, just in case.
Next week's edition of the column will go out on Tuesday 2 August,
as I'll be traveling a lot without computer access. Editions may be
disrupted throughout August and September if the purchase goes
through and TWIDW headquarters moves.
